Prop Set Design

Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory Set Design

When:

Fall 2017

Course:

Prototyping

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop, PaintTool Sai

Description:

Taking into consideration both design and user experience disciplines, this project has been made into a physical object through various iterations. You'll see the process of ideation, sketching, prototypes, and refined prototypes to reach the final product.

This assignment had us design a prop from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory play for the Ephrata Performing Arts Center. This was a unique opportunity to visit a site outside of the classroom and talk with someone in the industry. EPAC has a unique stage design which impacts how we would design our prop.

Ephrata Theater

I chose the bed that the grandparents sleep in Charlie's house as my prop – the design had to differ from both the movie and theater version since this is a circular stage. (As in, there is audience seating in the front and sides of the stage.) Therefore, I created a circular bed on wheels, so it could both easily move onto stage and swivel during the performance.

Sketch

The focus was on mix-matched furniture and clashing patterns. I sketched the environment the bed would be placed in as well, so we can see what other characters can be doing (as Charlie's parents are also present). There is a laundry hanger on the right that the mother can occupy herself with during the scene. The black and white shading I used in the sketch demonstrates the limited saturation and low contrast the actual set would be, as his home is drab and muted, a stark contrast to the chocolate factory seen later in the show.

Though the bed is not to scale, the theme and functionality would remain the same for the full size version. The linens on the bed will be hand sewn and made from well-worn materials – I used old scarfs from a thrift store for the scaled down version.

Note the varied use of materials, colors, and textures. The stitching is very visible, giving it a more hand made and lived-in feel. The headboard to support actors and pillows was made with a large coaster – but any kind of structure can be used.
